Having been sustained by New York’s Costume Institute since the 70s, 2020 saw the Met Gala – along with pretty much everything else – withdrawn due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Having also been delayed earlier this year from its typical spot the first Monday in May, the 2021 extravaganza was *finally* here.
Held on Monday, September 13th, the Met Gala marked the commencement of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit which is this year entitled “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”
So what were our favourite looks from the night? While the guest list was undoubtedly a slimmed-down affair due to the continuing government guidelines, the theme encouraged a sincere celebration of American designers. With Timothee Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka co-chairing the event, one thing we do know is that there was a wealth of epic looks.
Alongside awe-inspiring outfits, fashion’s elite pushed beauty boundaries, too, with bold and otherworldly hair looks, sure to make red carpet history. Below, see our top 6hair moments, from the brilliantly spirited to the strikingly mesmerising.
Megan Fox took the red carpet solo at the Met Gala 2021 — with a brand-new hairstyle to rock.
For fashion’s greatest night, she went out for fun Bettie Page-Esque bangs for the first time. Rather than binding to the retro look, hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons clipped on a faux hairpiece for the special occasion to achieve the short, blunt fringe.
Fitzsimons also went for ultra-long extensions to create a thickset, cord-wrapped braid that ran past Fox’s waist for an unexpected Lara Croft: Tomb Raider twist. He went all out to give it a mirror-like sheen and flyaway-free look.
Gigi Hadid chose to try red hair in 2021. The supermodel debuted her new copper hair, which was dyed by New York City-based hair stylist Panos Papandrianos back in March. For the 2021 Met Gala, she decided to adhere to the red family but took a fiery red shade that’s reminiscent of Ariel’s hair from The Little Mermaid.
Hadid realistically looked like a Barbie doll with this classic look. Her fiery hair was assembled into a high ponytail full of volume, length, and texture. The base of the ponytail mirrors a pompadour, and we have a feeling some serious teasing took place here. We love how these red pieces of hair cascade towards her mid-back in large waves. The hair texture works great with this look. The black bedazzled barrette was a show-stealer for this glam look.
Kristen Stewart tried a new hairstyle at 2021’s Met Gala. Leading 1950s rockabilly style, the actor paired a retro ponytail—complete with a pin-up “victory roll” fringe—with pink brocade Chanel. (The nostalgic effect echoed the Old Hollywood beauty mood in evidence elsewhere on the red carpet at the Met.)
Hairstylist Abergel created the faux bangs by creating a V-shape at the front of Stewart’s hairline, then rolling this section of hair into a classic pin-up-style fringe once the ponytail was flawless. To finish the high pony, he secured it with some black string for a low-maintenance glaze.
For the 2021 Met Gala, Barbie pulled out a totally different look that made us do a double-take when she first stepped onto the red carpet. The Euphoria star traded her dark black hair for a much lighter hue that’s a mix of brown and blonde. Malcolm Marquez, the hairstylist behind the new “bronde” look, styled Ferreira’s hair in long curls with a middle part and a pearl accent down the centre that matched her vintage ensemble. The look was topped off by her freshly bleached eyebrows that were drawn on in a ’20s-inspired stick-thin pattern.
Hailee Steinfeld legit made us gasp at the 2021 Met Gala, as she was almost unrecognizable when she showed off a new blond-bombshell look at the Met Gala — causing some fans to question if it was really her.
The 24-year-old “Hawkeye” actress still had her usual dark hair on Instagram early Monday as she prepped for the star-studded event — but stunned with a new blond bob and matching bleached eyebrows when she walked the red carpet.
Kim rewrote the rules of red carpet this year as she stepped out in her head-to-toe black Balenciaga outfit (complete with head covering)
Appleton, who is Kim K’s go-to hairstylist and the man behind Ariana Grande’s flawless signature high ponytail, created a look so simple yet eye-catching. The duo settled on a 75-inch floor-length ponytail that was “simple and clean, but high shine with a luxe finish weave in extensions”
To sum up, the star-studded event witnessed fantastic fashion and sartorial celebrities that looked more fabulous than ever. What were your favourite looks? Do tell us below.
